When Shakespeare wrote “they fight” it wasn’t just because he liked swordplay. He had a vision to use the sword fight as a vehicle to establish the characters and move the story. Tim Weske’s Swordplay for Shakespeare summer day camp has been designed to enhance the students’ study of Shakespeare by allowing the sword fight to help move the story with situation, theme and character in mind. The program entails the in-depth examination of scenes from Shakespearean plays that contain fighting. All sessions begin with teaching students footwork, movement and sword work. Students study the scene for clues on character relationship and fighting styles. From there, they progress to learning a choreographed sword fight, rehearse the scene with dialogue and end out their session with a final performance. Over the course of a week, students will perform two different scenes, one comedic and one dramatic, finding specific acting moments and establishing character motivations within the swordfight. Tim Weske has trained his staff of professional actor/educators. Swordplay has been teaching various programs throughout the greater Los Angeles area for nearly twenty years. Session*
